What’s all the buzz about CBD?
CBD is all a buzz over the internet and is quite the trend in the health and wellness industry at the moment. If you haven’t heard about it, here’s what you need to know.
The market is growing fast with the global Cannabidiol (CBD) market valued at USD 2.8 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach approximately USD 89 billion by the end of 2026.
The boom in research projects aimed at helping the medical world understand the benefits of CBD have produced positive results especially when it comes to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation, pain and anxiety and depression to name a few.
More and more South Africans are choosing cannabidiol (CBD) as a way of providing natural relief for their medical conditions. Not only for themselves interestingly enough, but also for their pets.
For a beginner it can feel a little tricky trying to figure it all out.
This is a simple guide to get you started.
Please note ** it is still important to consult with a medical professional who is well versed in the therapeutic use of CBD before beginning any use for yourself or your pet.
Is CBD legal in South Africa?
In May of 2019, the Department of Health made the cannabis derivate cannabidiol available for wholesale distribution in South Africa with certain limitations.
Any products in the market may only contain a maximum daily dose of 20 milligrams (mg) or less and CBD products can’t claim to cure or treat any specific condition. They can only advertise broadly about general health enhancement or promise to relieve minor symptoms.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active agent found in plants of the cannabis variety such as hemp and marijuana. Although CBD and THC are both found in the cannabis plant it is important to distinguish between the two. THC is the agent that has psychoactive properties (makes you high), CBD does not. So what CBD products won’t do, is make you high.
Why use CBD?
CBD shows potential as a plant-derived anti-inflammatory without the side effects of medications. It has been used to treat anxiety, epilepsy, muscle pains, insomnia, arthritis, and menstrual cramps with some amazing results. It’s also a powerful agent against acne and skin inflammations.
It interacts with the serotonin reception of our brain and that promotes a lot of relaxation.
How to choose CBD products
You can get CBD oils, capsules, balms, lotions, pet oils, vapes, tinctures, teas and more. What you buy all depends on what you are treating. If you are treating chronic muscle pain you might find more relief from a balm or if you are treating anxiety you might find more relief from an oil. It is subjective to the specific application and desired treatment.
Are there risks?
There are no known risks associated with CBD consumption. According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
Where can I buy it?
CBD products are available for purchase on the shelves of Clicks, Dischem and other retail shops. There also are a variety of online stores.
CBD related searches on Google are 3 times more than meditation and 7 times more than acupuncture.
There is clearly an interest, there’s also clearly a rapidly expanding market. Expect to see more CBD infused skincare ranges, nutrition based products, period relief kits and roll ons and so much more.
