In September, AFI Africa Fashion Award nominee Kibonen Nfi showcased her SS2015 collection – “Multifarious” at the Art Institute Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York. She showcased this landmark collection at MBFW in South Africa on 29 October.
The collection is inspired by her memories of a colourful marketplace in her hometown Bamenda, Cameroon, where the royalty and the rural people intertwine the use of garments as textures, patterns and embellishments are tweaked and the result is a phenomenal fusion of traditional prints crafted in a refreshingly contemporary way.
In 2009 Kibonen became a force to reckon with when she came up with the ingenious idea to revolutionise the “Toghu, also known as the “royal regalia” worn by the Tikar people of the Bamileke and Bamenda regions of Cameroon, West African. This has been her core signature, blending these traditional prints and symbols with more modern silhouettes and contemporary designs.
