DIY Beauty Hacks for the Holidays

DIY Beauty Hacks for the Holidays

Turmeric has been at the forefront of the health and beauty industry for the last couple of years but the spice has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.

Due to plenty of research, modern science is also fully on board now and it is being praised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

In fact, it has numerous health benefits and has also been known to be an antiseptic and antibacterial spice that can heal wounds and aid in curing more major health issues like arthritis, skin rashes and liver problems.

It can be used both internally and externally.

Turmeric is known to heal your skin, clear acne and give you an extra glow. It can also work wonders on your hair and teeth. In fact, this spice is so handy and so versatile, with so many uses and benefits, that below are just a few DIY hacks that will leave your body glowing, skin clear, hair healthy and teeth white this holiday season and beyond.

Face Mask

½ cup plain yoghurt

¼ teaspoon of turmeric

Mix yoghurt and turmeric. Apply an even layer to the skin, leave on for 10-20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Apply your moisturiser or some oil to lock in the moisture.

Face and Body Scrub

½ cup white sugar

½ cup brown sugar

¼ cup almond oil or any of your favourite

2 tablespoons turmeric powder

10-15 drops lavender, tea tree or geranium essential oil

Add all ingredients to a small bowl and mix well. Transfer to an airtight container or glass jar and use within one month. Rub turmeric mixture on wet skin for gentle exfoliation and rinse with warm water. Apply moisturizer/lotion/cream to skin to lock in the moisture and healthy glow.

Eye Mask (for dark circles under the eye)

1 tablespoon buttermilk

1 tablespoon turmeric powder

Mix the ingredients in a bowl. Use a small brush and apply the mixture under the eye being careful not to get it in your eye. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water or wipe away with a wet washcloth. You may notice a hint of yellow under the eye but this will soon disappear once you apply eye cream or moisturizer.

Hair Mask

2 tablespoons turmeric powder

1 tablespoon of honey

¼ cup of milk or more if desired

Mix ingredients together to form a smooth paste. Make sure there are no lumps. Gently massage this mixture onto your scalp and all over your hair. Leave it on for 20  minutes and then shampoo and condition your hair as per normal.

This mask helps nourish and hydrate your hair and prevents hair loss.

Teeth Whitening Mixture

 ½ cup coconut oil

1 tablespoon turmeric powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

Add all the ingredients to a small glass jar and mix until combined well. Brush your teeth as per normal with toothpaste. Use a separate toothbrush (turmeric can stain) and scoop out some of the mixture onto the toothbrush. Brush teeth with whitening mixture for up to a minute. Spit and rinse and make sure not to use a white towel when wiping dry to avoid any colour stains.
