7 effortless ways to turn anger into opportunity

2020 is definitely a year for the history books.

One we will remember for a long long time. So far, it has brought us Covid-19 and possibly the biggest global civil uprising in the movement of #BlackLivesMatter.

We are only past the halfway mark. We still have the American presidential elections and second and third waves of the Covid-19 to contend with, and with a few short months left till the end of the year, who knows what else could happen?

And if that wasn’t nearly enough, as a country we are dealing with another pandemic in the form of Gender Based Violence. The statistics are alarming, the anger is palpable and justice for victims and their families is slow or non-existent.

So far it has caused massive upheaval in our lives. It has shed light on economic and health insecurities, systematic racial injustice, patriarchal inequality and femicide to name a few.

Why is there anger?

Everyone’s life has been disrupted or paused and it feels like the squeezing of the economy, of social structures and of health systems is putting the spotlight on all that is an injustice in our worlds. This along with the feeling of enough is enough is causing anger.

If we think about anger it is blazing hot. It blows out and it is often violent.

Do you remember how you felt the last time you were angry? Maybe red in the face, maybe sweaty and maybe explosive?

The feelings of anger, frustration and resentment cause heat inside our bodies. It is this heat that makes us red and swollen. It causes us to inflame and it affects our health.

How do we identify this heat?

Emotional Heat

Is the restriction of lockdown making you feel frustrated? Is the constriction of the economy making you feel angry? Is the uncertainty of Covid-19 making you feel resentful?

Relationship Heat

Is 24 hour close contact with your partner causing arguments? Is your children’s behaviour making you scream? Is your family situation creating fights?

Dietary Heat

Is taking too much sugar making you feel like you’re on a high and then a crashing low? Is too much processed food leading to high blood pressure?

Why is this a threat to our well being?

According to Dr Deepak Chopra  there are two main areas of threat that this heat can cause. The first is chronic stress which disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can suppress the immune system, disrupt your digestive and reproductive system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and speed up the aging process.

The second threat is chronic inflammation. The symptoms of chronic inflammation are quite subtle in nature and include things such as fatigue, rashes, abdominal pain, chest pain, mouth sores and fever.

If we do not find solutions to the threat we may very well experience our external and internal worlds in turmoil and our health at risk.

What are the opportunities to this threat?

If the agitation and anger is causing heat in our bodies, what will calm us down?

For that we need to look to the opposite of heat and that is cool. Can you imagine sitting under a shady tree on a hot day and relaxing? Leaning back against the bark and exhaling. Can you imagine feeling calm and peaceful? That feeling right there is what we need to help us stay cool.

Cool = Inner Peace

How do we activate coolness?


Here are a few practical tips:

Food to include in your diet

  • Vegetables: cucumber and leafy greens (spinach, kale, chard etc)
  • Fruit: Melons (watermelon), grapes, berries
  • Herbs: mint, cilantro, dill


  • Wear loose, light, natural fabrics like linen, cotton or hemp to stay cool.


  • Wear cooling shades such as white, blues, pastels and a touch of gold.

Skin care:

  • Use natural products that have cucumber, rose and aloe in them.
  • Use a cooling moisturizer like coconut oil

Essential oils:

  • Invest in some lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint and sandalwood. Place a drop or 2 in a cool bath and enjoy.

Household plants:

  • Try buying some Aloe vera, ferns, ficus tree (fiddle leaf fig), snake plant and golden pothos to keep around the house to keep it cool

Spend time in nature:

  • Go for a walk near water such as the beach, a river or lake
  • Hike along nature trails

It looks like we may be in for a long, uncertain ride with Covid-19.

It looks like 2020 may be the year that shooketh us all .

And it certainly looks like this may be a good time to stay cool and become more actively involved with our health and well being.
