Jacqui Emmanuel Does Breakfast at Tiffany’s

About a month ago I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to mix with South Africa’s leading fashion authorities at the Buyers Lounge at South African Fashion Week (www.safw.co.za). This became a highlight of my fashion pilgrimage; getting a blueprint of what’s on everyone’s desirable list, and looking out for rising talent in the South African Fashion landscape. One such star, who captured my interest, is the Miss charismatic, fashion historian, iced cupcake-loving, philanthropist, couturier and Durban-based (kwa-Zulu Natal), young business woman, Jacqui Emmanuel (@jacquiemmanuel)

For the A/W2014 women’s wear range, she makes vintage references to the silver screen starlets of the late 50’s  and 60’s, such as Jane Russell, Bridget Bardot and Audrey Hepburn. Jacqui described her inspiration for this collection: “The chic, Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired collection is complemented with a salmon tinted palette, appliqued winter florals fabrications, bonded lace and a combination of embossed scuba and jacquards. The collection goes from corporate to cocktail.”

I was instantly drawn to the saturated femininity of the entire collection. This range took the ABC’s of design and expanded on it by make period references, with boat necklines, fitted tailoring, volumous and elongated banana sleeve blouses, flared trousers, through to the modesty of hemline cocktail dresses and regal capes.

The range transports you to the pages of an old home economics textbook. Its clean lines and cuts, with a “can-be-styled-with-something-current” ethos, has sexy statement finishes and fabrics, such as a popcorn effect, whipped creamy-like, embossed scuba and puff pastry jacquard. Romantic georgettes and cotton (candy) velour has been used as a statement fabric, with sweet, rose gold fastenings and embellishes, creating a flirty finish.

I’m Obbbbbbsessed with each and every piece in this range, the sophisticated elements and the refined crafting. Jacqui Emmanuel’s designs will appeal to every woman and they should invest in a piece or two (or even a range).
