Cosmopolitan magazine celebrates Grammy winner Nicki Minaj with 3 different covers

To celebrate the success of women during Women’s Month 2015, the August print run of top South African women’s glossy magazine Cosmopolitan, was split three ways, and the magazine’s readers will find on shelf a showcase of three different fierce cover shots of Grammy Award-winning rapper and international music superstar, Nicki Minaj.

Cosmopolitan, which on top of its print audience has a market-leading tribe of loyal online fans (the week of 27 June 2015 saw 216,000 unique page views and a social audience of 503 000+), is offering a random-draw cash prize of R10,000 to readers for telling them which cover they like most.

“We saw the shoot and there was no way we could choose one cover,” says editor Cathy Lund says. The three covers show Nicki in a blue star-spangled one-piece, a gold sparkler, and (Lund’s favourite) a bright yellow Moschino number, which she’s wearing in a bath. As one commentator said, “You’re going to need all of the sunglasses emojis for this one!”

Lund notes that Nicki sums up the Cosmopolitan tribe’s ethos and mood: ‘As we flagged her on our cover, Nicki is “uncensored, unapologetic and unbelievable”. She is the world’s highest-paid female rapper and she’s a serious businesswoman but she didn’t shy away from deeply personal questions about her private life. We can all learn from her candid views.’

Nicki opened up to Cosmopolitan about loss (‘It was one of the toughest, loneliest periods of my life. It was the first time I had to buckle down and be a big girl’), being demanding a boss (‘I’ve had tough bosses my whole life. In turn, I think I have become tough on people. I don’t really believe in excuses, even with myself’), her future as a wife and mother (’Ten years from now, I will have two children… I’ll be a housewife with a career I can run from home’) and her sex life (‘I demand that I climax. I think all women should demand that’).

After the shoot, the Feeling Myself rapper said: “What I really love about Cosmopolitan is that it appeals to the everyday girl, and to every girl… I think we definitely accomplished something very sexy and forward [with this shoot], and I can’t wait for my fans to see it.”
Cosmopolitan’s August issue is currently on sale at all leading retailers. The issue includes the annual 24-page Hitched bridal section, featuring 10 real South African weddings (and the opportunity to win a designer wedding gown); 12 pages of career and investment advice; 12 pages of body and mind health; a beauty shoot and interview with Ruby Rose of Orange Is The New Black, and the Nicki Minaj shoot and interview.
