Between Home and Wisdom Exhibition Brings Italy and Du Noon Together

Between Home and Wisdom is a collaborative exhibition between Italian fine-art photographer Tommaso Fiscaletti and two South African women, product developer Binky Newman from Design Afrika and jewellery designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik from Pichulik.

The project began as a design collaboration between Du Noon Urban Weavers, Design Afrika and Pichulik aimed at workshopping a range of bags that marry traditional Xhosa twining techniques with Pichulik’s signature rope detailing. It grew into a photography project when Fiscaletti joined Newman and Pichulik on a trip to Dunoon. He found the experience poignant, “seeing the women conduct their daily tasks alongside acting as conduits of ancestral wisdom. It was both humbling and illuminating.”

Inspired by the women, Tommaso explored the challenges they face in having to balance their spiritual vocation with their day-to-day township life through his project, Between Home and Wisdom. To bring this to fruition, Tomasso has to raise £2 300 by Wednesday 22 April in order to hold the planned exhibition on 7 May in Cape Town. (£1 747 of the required £4 000 has already been raised through, a crowdsourcing website.) The photographs will be for sale at the exhibition and a percentage of the money raised will go to the community of Dunoon.

Pledges start at £5 but a pledge of £10 comes with a limited-edition postcard and everyone who pledges £40 will get a signed copy of the limited-edition book. From there the reward increases as the amount pledged increases. In addition, each donator’s name will go into a draw and stand a chance to win a Pichulik neckpiece to the value of R2 500.
